Thank you to everyone who connected with us last week at Applied Net 2024! Whether you attended our Cheers Before the Convention party, stopped by our booth, or simply exchanged a few words with us, we truly appreciate your time. We’ve been exhibiting at Applied Net for years, and we have to say – they really outdid themselves this year.

Now that the whirlwind of the conference has settled, we wanted to take a moment to officially introduce ourselves – we’re Archway Computer.

We’ve been attending Applied Net for over 10 years and are proud to be an Applied Systems Preferred Partner. For more than three decades, we’ve provided IT solutions and Digital Marketing Services designed specifically for insurance agencies like yours. And yes, our hangover kits at the party were such a hit that we ran out in the first hour! Next year, we’ll be sure to double (or triple) our supply to keep everyone covered.

To help you turn all the great insights from the conference into action, we’re excited to share a Post-Applied Net 2024 Checklist, key takeaways on how AI is transforming the insurance industry, and insights into how Archway Computer can support your agency with tailored IT solutions and digital marketing.

Post-Applied Net 2024 Checklist

To help you make the most of what you learned at the conference, we’ve created a Post-Applied Net 2024 Checklist to keep you organized and moving forward. Whether it’s following up with new connections, reviewing key insights, or implementing new strategies, this checklist will help you turn your conference experience into real results.

Click here to download your checklist and start turning those Applied Net takeaways into real results.

Conference Highlights: The AI Revolution in Insurance

This year’s Applied Net conference was all about the future of insurance, and the standout theme was the rise of AI. As Taylor Rhodes, CEO of Applied Systems, said: “Insurance is on the cusp of its next generation, from technology and talent to emerging new risks.”

AI is no longer just a buzzword – it’s already being used to reduce operational friction, especially in claims processing and commercial lines. Next year’s conference will dive even deeper into specific AI use cases that can help agencies streamline operations and grow their book of business.

Here are a few key trends that emerged:

  • AI is automating claims handling, improving efficiency and reducing bottlenecks.
  • The demand for professionals skilled in AI, machine learning, and cloud computing is rising as traditional roles evolve.
  • Over 25% of insurance jobs are expected to change due to AI adoption, creating new opportunities for those embracing technology.

The future is here, and it’s powered by AI!

Interested in exploring how your agency can leverage AI to streamline operations and drive growth? Let’s chat about how Archway can help you make the most of these cutting-edge tools.

Labor Day weekend is here, and what better time to get everything you need for Applied Net? Every conference pro knows that preparation is key, and after attending Applied Net for years, I’ve learned a thing or two about what it takes to thrive at this event. That’s why I’ve put together a list of Amazon must-haves that will help you survive (and thrive) at Applied Net. Check out the list below, and get everything you need delivered right to your door.

🛒 Must-Have Items to Shop This Weekend

Hoka Shoes
These Hokas are your best friend for walking around the convention center. Trust me, with all the walking you’ll do, you’ll want something comfortable and supportive. This is definitely not the time to break in new kicks!

Portable Chargers

Whether you’re taking notes, staying in touch with colleagues, or snapping photos, your phone battery is going to get a workout. This compact charger duo doesn’t require a cord, making it a breeze to slip into your pocket or bag.

Remarkable Tablet
The Remarkable tablet is perfect for taking notes during sessions without the distractions of a traditional tablet. It’s light, easy to carry, and feels just like writing on paper—ideal for jotting down all the great insights you’ll pick up.

Portable Steamer

Wrinkled clothes are a no-go when networking. This compact travel steamer ensures your outfits stay crisp and professional, so you can focus on making connections, not your wardrobe. Stay sharp and polished, no matter how packed your suitcase is!

Business Card Holder Book

This padfolio is a game-changer for any conference attendee, keeping your business cards, tablet, notes, and documents all in one place. With everything organized and easily accessible, you’ll be ready to network, take notes, and manage your schedule without missing a beat.

Rescue After Party Patch

Cocktails and conferences go hand in hand, but if you drink too much too early, you probably won’t be on your A-game for the rest of Applied Net (coming from experience). That’s where the Rescue Party Patch comes in—apply it before you start sipping, and peel it off when you’re done. Or, stop by our pre-conference party where we’ll be handing out hangover kits to keep you sharp all conference long!

Memory Foam Sleep Mask

Getting enough rest is key to staying sharp at Applied Net, and my favorite sleep mask is perfect for ensuring you do. I can’t sleep without it! With its memory foam no-pressure design, it blocks out all light, making it easier to sleep whether you’re on the plane, in your hotel, or just grabbing a quick nap between sessions.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something—let me know if there’s anything I missed! If you decide to pick up any of these must-haves for Applied Net, I’d love to hear how they work out for you.

And don’t forget—the remaining spots for our pre-conference party are running out fast, so be sure to RSVP soon. Don’t miss a night that is sure to be full of great company, networking, and a head start on all the conference fun.

I hope you enjoyed this Applied Net Amazon Must-Haves Master List, and wishing you a fantastic Labor Day weekend!

iPhone: Round 14

There are four new iPhones on the block, coming in the variations of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. So what’s new?

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus share the same features, but they differ in their physical size and battery capacities, and the same applies to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is not just big in form, it’s big in character. It is a beast of a phone, and not just because of its larger lenses. This big-screen flagship packs a new 48MP camera, an always-on display and a new A16 Bionic processor that should once again lap the Android competition.

There’s a refreshed design that’s really striking, especially in this larger format, coupled with performance enhancements, battery improvements, camera improvements, the Always-On Display and the Dynamic Island feature. Sure, this device is pretty heavy, it’s very expensive, and it offers all the same features as its smaller sibling, but it’s a stunning device for those who want a larger screen or more battery life.

Will I be getting the new iPhone? Probably. If you have it already, please send me an e-mail and let me know how you’re liking it!

Good Clean Crunch

Being gluten-free, I’ve always had a hard time finding a cereal that not only tastes good, but isn’t full of sugary crap. Recently my daughter, and general health guru, introduced me to Catalina Crunch and, without being dramatic, it has changed my life.

Coming in a range of classic cereal varieties, including cinnamon toast crunch, chocolate peanut butter, and honey graham, Catalina Crunch is low carb, zero sugar, gluten & grain Free, with 11 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber per serving. A mouthful, I know. The brand also offers a variety of healthy snack mixes and cookie options for my non-gluten free friends out there. You can purchase a variety pack of cereals here. Happy Crunching!

The Last Word

After a brief vacation hiatus, I am glad to be back to our regularly scheduled programming, and back in your inbox! Hope you all have a fantastic rest of your week!

Minty Fresh Finance

First up, let’s talk about Mint.com. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Brad, you’re a tech geek, not a finance guru!” Well, my friends, even us tech geeks need to manage our finances. Mint.com is like having a personal finance assistant in your pocket, minus the actual person. It helps you organize your money, create budgets, and track your spending. It’s like having a sidekick for your bank account, helping you stay on top of your financial game. So if you’re tired of your wallet feeling lighter than an old-school floppy disk, give Mint.com a try!

Robokiller: Putting Spam Calls on ‘Terminate’ Mode

If you’re a human being living in 2023 with a cell phone, then my guess is you are plagued by spam calls and text messages. Seriously, it’s like a digital invasion of annoying aliens trying to sell us things we don’t want or need. But fear not, my fellow geeks, for I bring you a solution – Robokiller. This app is like having a robot bodyguard for your phone. It identifies and blocks spam calls and texts with its advanced AI technology. Say goodbye to those pesky telemarketers and robocalls and hello to a peaceful digital existence. And if you’re an iPhone user, Apple has some handy settings to help you avoid unwanted calls too.

The Millennial Moment – ChatGpt

I talked about ChatGPT in the last newsletter, and since then it has continued to leveling up with some seriously awesome upgrades in the ChatGPT Plus beta version.

First things first, ChatGPT Plus now boasts supercharged ChatGPT plugins! These little gems bring third-party integrations right into the chatbot interface. Picture this: you can plan your trips and book accommodations without ever leaving ChatGPT. Expedia’s plugin is just the beginning. Soon, we’ll have more plugins from big-name companies like Instacart. It’s like having a one-stop-shop for all your favorite services, right in the palm of your hand.

But wait, there’s more! OpenAI has unlocked the power of web browsing for ChatGPT Plus. Yup, you heard that right! Our beloved AI chatbot is spreading its digital wings and diving into the vast world of the internet. And guess what? Bing search integration is part of the deal, thanks to a collaboration with Microsoft. You can now browse the web and get prompt, up-to-date responses from ChatGPT Plus. No more outdated info from the past. ChatGPT has leveled up its fact-checking game!

The Last Word

Ah, summertime is just around the corner, my tech-savvy friends! And what better way to kick off the season than by planning your next vacation with ChatGPT? Picture this: lounging on a tropical beach, sipping your favorite drink, all while ChatGPT helps you curate the perfect itinerary. I know, what a time to be alive. Until next time, my friends, stay geeky and stay tuned for the next installment of Brad’s Blog!

ChatGPT: Your AI-ssistant for Life’s Little Tasks

Do you ever wish you had a personal assistant to help you with all the little things in life? Well, now you can have one, thanks to ChatGPT! ChatGPT is an AI chatbot app that can help you with just about anything (except write this newsletter, of course ;)). Need to schedule an appointment? No problem. Want to order a pizza? Done. All you have to do is type your request into the chatbox, and ChatGPT will take care of the rest.

But here’s the cool part: ChatGPT isn’t just a pre-programmed chatbot. It’s powered by advanced AI technology that allows it to learn and adapt to your needs. The more you use it, the better it gets at understanding your requests and providing the right solutions. And the best part? ChatGPT is available 24/7, so you can get help whenever you need it. No more waiting on hold or dealing with frustrating customer service reps. With ChatGPT, help is just a chatbox away. Give it a try and see how it can simplify your life.

The Last Word

And just like that, I’m back! Thank you everyone for patiently waiting for the reboot of our newsletter after a 4-month hiatus. I truly appreciate your support and enthusiasm for all things geeky.

As I wrap up this edition of Brad’s Blog, I have to take a moment to mourn the loss of the UCLA Bruins in March Madness. I also want to acknowledge the many, MANY broken brackets around the country whose predictions didn’t quite pan out this year – except, of course, for the last six people who somehow predicted all four Final Four teams correctly! But fear not, fellow geeks, for we know there’s always next year! Until then, have a great rest of your week!

Applied Net + IAOA Innovation Double Header

What a whirlwind the past week was! In case you weren’t there or missed our last newsletters, Archway Computer was in Nashville at both AppliedNet and IAOA Innovation, and we had an absolute blast. Our team had a great time learning, networking, educating, connecting with so many of our agency partners and industry peers, and even hanging with none other than superstar Ricky Bobby. A big thank-you to Applied Systems and IAOA for hosting these phenomenal events! If you have any photos from our booth or late-night events, please send them my way (assuming I look great in the photos).

Waste Less Time + Write More Business

Speaking of Applied Net, one of the big announcements of last week was that Applied Systems has Acquired Tarmika, the leading commercial lines rating solution that streamlines small business insurance. Tarmika is set to be fully integrated with Applied Epic and EZLynx, and over time, users can expect embedded commercial lines quoting capabilities powered by Tarmika right inside the agency’s management system.

You can learn more about the partnership here:

(Another?) Amazon Prime Day

Sometimes it feels like it’s Prime Day everyday at this point, but Jeff Bezos is at it again with this week’s Amazon’s Prime Early Access Sale, which ends today! To help you navigate through the hundreds of early Black Friday deals to shop, here are a few of our favorites at Archway HQ:

Renpho Percussion Massager

I love my Theragun, but if you’re not ready to make a hefty investment for one, check out this great dupe on Amazon, the Renpho percussion massager. It has five different head attachments for targeting different areas, soothing sore muscles, easing neck and shoulder pain, and working through tough knots. And who doesn’t love a massage? Normally $249.99, get it today for $69.99.

Second-Gen AirPods

You all know I love my AirPods – so much so we even did a giveaway at last week’s conferences for the new AirPods Pro 2s. But if you didn’t win the contest, just don’t care about the newer and more expensive features, check out the Second-Gen AirPods. Normally $159.00, on sale today for $89.99.

Waterpik Water Flosser

As a clean-teeth-freak, (is that a thing?) I attribute 95% of my good dental hygiene to my Waterpik Water Flosser. This gadget not only improves gum health, but also removes up to 99.9% of plaque with good ‘ol water pressure. Normally $99.99, get it today for $44.99.

The Last Word

I’m not going to lie – this past week was a crazy one, but incredibly rewarding. Getting to see so many familiar faces, and meeting so many new ones, are part of the reason why insurance conventions are one-of-a-kind. If you’ve never attended a convention and need some guidance on where to begin, feel free to contact me, or even check out these tips on attending your first, from the Insurance Conference Expert herself, SueAnn Priem. Thank you again for supporting the blog, and I hope you have a great, relaxing-post conference week!

Turkey Week Tech Tips

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, not to mention stressful. While we can’t ensure all your flights will arrive on time, or that the airline won’t lose your luggage, here are Archway we can offer some tech-related tips to help give you some peace of mind during this crazy time:

  1. Unplug: When you leave your home or office for the holiday weekend, unplug your computer/any devices you won’t be using. This will protect your tech from potential power surges while you’re not home.
  2. Log out: This is a good tip to practice no matter what time of year it is: When you are finished with whatever you’re doing online, log out of your session! Whether it be company accounts, social media, or your online banking, manually signing out of your session ensures that if someone gains access to your physical machine, they won’t be able to get into your accounts.
  3. Backup your files: Coming back from time away would be seriously soured if you found that the files on your machine had been compromised in some way. Before you leave, make sure your files are backed up.Doing a backup right before leaving for a long trip is a great way to ensure your files are just as you left them.
  4. Scan physical documents: Identification documentation, passports, important certificates – losing track of physical documents is easier than we’d like it to be. Scan your important documents into your phone (or take photos of them) and put them in a password-protected folder or in a secure connected cloud account like Google Drive or iCloud. That way, you have access to them in case of an emergency
  5. Be wary with social media: This one is just good common sense – be careful with what you post on social media while you’re away. Potential thieves may see you’re away and assume they have an opportunity. Definitely never post your address or location on social media, and make sure you have location services limited for your social apps!

The Last Word

That’s all from me, folks! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I just wanted to thank you all for your continued support of this blog. I am honored that you take even a few minutes out of your busy day to read (or even just skim!) these blog posts. Whether you are purchasing one of the products we recommend, implementing one of the tech tips we suggest, or are just here to laugh at my geeky dad jokes, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!

From our Archway Computer family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Clearing the Air

It’s wildfire season in SoCal again, and although fortunately this year I haven’t been affected, the haze of smoke in the air is a constant reminder. Air quality in the region has sharply fallen as a result of the blazes, and since we like breathable air in this household I invested in an indoor purifier. This 3-in-1 model I found on Amazon removes smoke, dust, and pet dander, operated with the touch of a single button and looking pretty sharp while doing it.

Pocket Aces

I was chatting with some of the younger members of Team Archway recently and it seems to be a consensus: if you’re in the wall: the haberdashery business is set to take another hard hit in the coming years. This time the victim is the physical wallet, and it makes sense given that less people carry cash than ever before and a lot of folks just use their iPhone to pay for things.

On this one I’m actually ahead of the curve, ditching the old-school Costanza Classic a while back for this sleek carbon-fiber job known as the Ridge Wallet. It holds up to 12 cards in its replaceable elastic securing structure as well as blocking RFID signals that can be used to skim your card data. It also has a lifetime warranty, so it just might be “the last wallet you’ll ever use.

I Need My Space

With the ever increasing specs of today’s smartphones, it seems like storage space would never be a problem…if you’re like most people, you’ve learned from experience that that’s almost never the case. This piece on Lifehacker sheds some light on effective management techniques so you never to do something barbaric like deleting your rideshare so you can check your email.

One of the things that can quickly eat up any spare memory you have is photos, and since it is now standard human protocol to take pictures of absolutely everything it’s only a matter of time until you get that dreaded “nope” warning. Fortunately, Google Photos is a convenient (and free!) resource that allows you to save your photos online so you have more space for other apps.

A Carefully Curated Waste of Time

Listen, not everything has to be ultra-productive…some days it’s just fine to lounge around on your couch (or at your desk) consuming content, and if you’re ever truly interested in wasting some time, here are the top viral videos of the past 10 years or so according to CNET. Sure, it’s a bit early in the year to finalize the listings–we still have a couple of months to go in this decade–but I think it serves as a pretty good Hall of Fame for Internet nonsense.

The Last Word

Well, I’ve got a full schedule ahead of me today so that’s about it for this edifying edition of “Brad’s Blog.” As always I appreciate you giving me your valuable time, and so I’m giving something back this month: your last chance to enter and win an iPhone 11! Just click the link to get a free entry into the drawing…or hey, if you’ll be in Vegas over the next couple days, why not swing by the Aria for an extra entry? I promise I’ll give you a turn to talk in person.

Card Tricks in Vegas

If you’ll be strolling the streets of Sin City when AppliedNet comes to town, odds are you’ll be leaving the event fairly loaded down with business cards…which, if you’re anything like me, you will promptly misplace. That’s why I love using the ClusterCards app…just scan the card (or cards, it can do multiple simultaneously) and watch the magic of technology as all the data is transcribed and saved, no typing required. It’s essential for conventions.

Scheduled Check-In

While I’m on the subject of apps, another resource I regularly rely on is called Checklist. Full disclosure, the non-free version is a little annoying–sometimes less is more–but for creating and keeping track of all those little daily details that would otherwise just slip through the cracks, it’s easy to use and very helpful.

Winter Weight Gain Is Coming

The Halloween decorations are starting to pop up, so that means Thanksgiving is like, next week and all the big winter holidays are just a few days after that. Every holiday season it seems like I go into the new year sporting a couple extra pounds, but this time around I’m aiming to get ahead of the game by dropping a few before the festivities.

If you’re also joining a gym to counteract seasonal weight gain in the coming months and don’t mind the finer things in fitness life, I’d suggest you give this a click…with Equinox locations in NYC, Texas, and across Northern Cali, there’s a good chance there’s somewhere swanky to sweat near you.

I totally get that going to the gym can take more effort than most can muster after a long day of adult life, so a little extra boost can go a long way in helping you power through your routine. I get mine from Metagenics, a carefully balanced multivitamin formulated to offer increased energy and overall vitality, which doesn’t make running any more fun but can make it possible in theory.

If motivation is more your issue, weight loss contests are an excellent way to give yourself something to strive for…I’m trying to organize a few folks at Team Archway into a pool, but if anyone out there in the world of inboxes wants to get in on this action it could certainly be arranged. Just email me.

Of course, anyone devoted to a healthy lifestyle knows that the numbers on the scale almost never tell the whole story. I believe the key to a life well lived is one lived in balance, and that’s why my favorite book on diet, exercise, and overall self-improvement is Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

The book speaks so clearly to me because it talks about the small everyday tweaks that make a healthier you without having to turn your life upside down, which is perfect because it would be a tragedy for me to have to live 100 years without the occasional trip to the steakhouse or extra helping of gluten-free mac and cheese.

Bose is Back on Top

As someone who works from practically anywhere, headphones are as essential an office supply for me as a calculator is for an engineer.

I’ve come and gone from Bose products over the years as competition has brought the best out of all manufacturers, but they’ve claimed the crown again with their SoundSport Free Wireless Earphones. Bringing together water resistance and an improved Bluetooth antenna together with that renowned Bose sound delivers something close to perfection, and in this business they’re worth every penny.

The Last Word

All right then, that’ll just about do it for this week! Thanks as always for making time for this inspired installment of “Brad’s Blog”…I appreciate it so much that I’m giving my readers a chance to enter the iPhone 11 giveaway we’re running to celebrate AppliedNet Las Vegas! Just click here to throw your hat in the ring…you’ll certainly know if you’ve won by the time you’re reading this next week.

Who’s Feelin’ Lucky?

I gotta say, just being back in your inbox at last feels great, but when you throw in the fact that it’s AppliedNet season too….well, it’s an especially magical Tuesday morning.

Look, I understand that not every organization even uses Applied products, but it’s always an entertaining affair with lots of interesting people in attendance…including myself and Team Archway, which is reason enough to attend. AppliedNet is consistently one of my favorite industry events, and we always like to mark the occasion by giving away something cool for one lucky person to remember us by: this time around it’s a brand new iPhone 11.

We’d love to catch you at the convention, but if you can’t make it out to Sin City from the 14th to the 18th we’re also giving you a chance to win by entering here because I really appreciate you not sending me to the spam folder after all this time.

Jump-Starting Inspiration

Just about everybody gets writers’ block from time to time…it can definitely be frustrating, but it’s not impossible to work through.

A lot of the time it’s caused by the classic “paralysis by analysis,” i.e. overthinking it, and this timeless Dale Carnegie book has retained its well-deserved popularity over the years with actionable strategies for helping the creative juices flow…a useful skill in practically every facet of life.

Submitted for Your Approval

One of the things I’ve been doing during my hiatus is making time for documentaries I’ve been pushing off for a while, so while I have you I’m going to share a couple that really stood out.

It’s been nearly 20 years since that infamous morning in 2001, and like many other Americans I still find myself thinking about 9/11 on a pretty regular basis. That’s why I was really captured by “You Are Here,”a documentary detailing the aftermath of the attacks during which all planes incoming to the US were diverted to the nearest airport.

35 of them landed at tiny Gander Newfoundland, a town of well under 10,000 people who experienced an influx of shellshocked newcomers. Without giving too much away the good folks of Gander responded more than admirably to the unexpected call to service, and it spoke to me on a personal level because it’s always encouraging to see people at their best.

On a more positive note,“Inside Bill’s Mind” is a four-part docuseries that highlights the philanthropic initiatives of Bill Gates, someone who apparently knows how to be a billionaire correctly.

I thought I had a good idea about his charity work, but the series takes a deep dive into his process for finding new solutions for problems with the assistance of some of the world’s most capable thinkers, and it’s really satisfying to see his efforts to make the world a better place unfold.

The Last Word

Well, as good as it is to be back in the saddle I’ve got a lot on the agenda this week, so this feels like an ideal place to put a bookmark in this.

Thanks as always for making time in your busy weekly schedule for this edifying edition of “Brad’s Blog!” I’m looking to get right back on the regular schedule, but if you have something you feel deserves some shine in the next installment or just want to tell me how much you’ve missed me, be sure  drop me a line!

We Anticipate Accelerate

Oh yes it’s that time of year again…in this business, the spring season is all about the NetVU! Well, I guess after the conference’s name change it’s “all about Accelerate,” but by whatever name the 3-day event kicking off May 21 represents one of the year’s biggest conferences.

This year the festivities come to Cincinnati, and although I don’t know much about “The Queen City”–including if anyone actually calls it that–I’m looking forward to meeting all my friends from Vertafore as well as putting faces to names I’ve heard and read so many times in the course of everyday communiques.

Actually, speaking of the folks over at Vertafore, I just remembered I did a little video for them after being named one of their 50 All-Stars in recognition of their 50th anniversary…always nice to do something a little special for my fans.

Okay fine, I’ll stop, but in any event you know whenever Team Archway hits the scene of a big conference we always do so with surprises in tow, and this time is no different. We’re giving away some pretty sweet tech gifts to celebrate another year being featured at the event, and if you want to get your hands on one all you have to do is enter at this link.

You don’t even have to attend the event itself to win one of these special prizes, although it would be great to catch you there…if you will find yourself in Cincinnati later this month, here’s where our booth will be located.

Love Your Local Library

Practically everyone could stand to read a little more, but if you’re thinking about buying that book, maybe don’t. This essential extension for studious Chrome users will automatically identify nearby libraries that stock the book you’re interested in, which is important because I feel libraries should remain relevant in the world of today…after all, they are one of the few public spaces where people can gather for fun without buying anything.

The Suite Life

Traveling with family is a way to get to know more about the people you’ve been close to your entire life…some topics come up on a visit to Berlin or Bangkok that just don’t pop up when you’re hanging around the house. If you’re planning a family vacation this summer, be sure to check out Suiteness, which catalogs and displays connecting rooms in hotels so you can be close in your travels without being too close in your travels.

Layover Logic

While we’re on the topic of travel, I want to share one of my secrets to getting the best rates on airfare: Skiplagged. Skiplagged is a clever little tool that not only shows the flight information the airlines put on their websites, but every stop in between so you can take advantage of the cheapest routes in ways they really don’t want you to.

Say you’re traveling from Chicago to Denver, which is a pretty popular route so the airlines can charge premium rates. What Skiplagged does is show you other options for reaching your destination, like taking advantage of a cheaper flight plan going from Chicago to Denver to Sacramento then just getting off the plane one airport early.

It’s perfectly legal, but the airlines hate it because they want to charge you what they want to charge you so there. In fact, they’re currently being sued by United Airlines, which is one of my least favorite carriers so they have to be doing something right.

Kicking Ads on Chrome

It seems like ads are getting more prevalent with Chrome…not only is it annoying to arrive on a website and be greeted by an autoplay video, but they’ve really gotten bad about sucking up your computer’s processing resources. A buddy of mine suggested this adblocker and it’s worked wonders…my browsing speed is way up AND I don’t have to sit through 5-7 seconds of a Japanese shampoo commercial.

The Last Word

All right, that should just about do it for this week in geek! Thanks as always for not sending me to the spam folder, and because you’ve been such a great sport about me having your email address if you have any suggestions on future topics or just want to shoot the breeze a bit, my good inbox is open to you as well.

Thank You, Nashville!

If you didn’t make it to AppliedNet in Nashville, I’m sorry to tell you you missed one heck of a show–and I’m not just talking about seeing Darius Rucker at the Grand Ole Opry.

Over 4,000 attendees were onsite for the big news about a new investment from a high profile company known only as “Capital G.” As an insider, I can tell you that rumor has it the big G is for Google and the deal is for 9 figures. That’s what we in this business call “real money.”

You’re probably going to hear a lot in the near future about what this means for the industry, but here’s my take on it: the fact is that Google has tried the insurance game before and failed…who knew insurance could be so complicated?

Well, independent agents like us know that as a matter of survival, and reading the tea leaves in their partnership with Applied tells me that they believe there is a place for the little guy long-term. Very insightful, and honestly refreshing.

Overshadowed by the big reveal were several significant announcements about updates to the Applied system itself, and you can get the SportsCenter version in this press release. Exciting times in insurance, no doubt about it.

And Now, A Word From God

While we’re on topic in Nashville, I want to discuss a little divine intervention that took place on the flight there. Just before takeoff, the pilot came onto the intercom to deliver some good news and some bad news.

The good news was that our flight would be leaving half an hour early, which was nice. The bad news is that the Internet and TV we were promised on our tickets wouldn’t be coming with us due to technical difficulties. That wasn’t so great. At least, it might not have been if I hadn’t recently downloaded Dennis Prager’s commentary on the Bible–starting, fittingly, with Exodus. Regardless of your religious bent, it’s a worthy read that offers poignant insights on the Bible’s enduring cultural impact.

Siri Gets Smarter

Siri is pretty useful right out of the box, but some of the shortcuts people have figured out for use with the digital assistant are pretty dang slick. Want to set Siri to automatically play your workout playlist when you get to the gym or send a text to members of a meeting if you’re running late? This feature from CNET shows you how.

The Last Word

All right, that’s about it for this week! Thanks just ever so much for taking time out of your busy early week schedule for another engrossing edition of “Brad’s Blog!” I’ll be back in your inbox next week, be sure to set a reminder with Siri.

Business and Pleasure

Between the event itself and getting a taste of the host city, AppliedNet is usually one of the better weeks on my yearly calendar.  Did I mention we are giving away an iPhone X at the conference? And you can enter here even if you won’t be at the show.

Since this year the event is set to emanate from Nashville a big chunk of my off-the-clock time will be spent licking my fingers…oh yes, I am going to eat a LOT of BBQ during my stay in Music City, and Thrillist was kind enough to assist me in this endeavour with this “best of” feature.

Wearable Wares Awareness

I’ve been wearing the new Apple Watch for a while now and while I was pretty much sold immediately on the new screen size and upgrades for everything from speakers to sensors, the possibilities with this iPhone XS I recently got my hands on are even more exciting.

Check out this piece from The Verge detailing why now is such an exciting time to be wearing a watch.

A Signature Touch

Email signatures are a big deal in this business…all of the most critical contact information delivered directly to the connecting client along with key tracking information that can help you tailor your message to your audience. Perfect.

Whether you want to present a cohesive company-wide brand or put your personal stamp on every outgoing message, the shiny digital future in which we live makes it easier than ever (and often free!) to do.

The Last Word

Well, I have a flight into Nashville International to catch, but before I pack up my BBQ bib I want to thank everyone for not sending me to the spam folder for another week!

The next inspired installment should arrive right on schedule, but before then I’d love to see your friendly face at AppliedNet Nashville (or in the slick new signature of any email you want to send me in the meantime)!
