]]>KrebsOnSecurity turns an experienced eye to this development, and his outlook is unsettling to say the least. To make a long (and interesting) article short, the first wave was just the Trojan Horse being rolled past the gates...the real danger is when the soldiers inside go on the attack.
The article goes into detail about the implications of municipal governments and public services being seedied with nasty stuff like remote lockout triggers, data cloning, and keystroke tracking, but any regular reader of this newsletter should know it’s all bad, especially if you’ve been affected. As for what you can do to avoid this impending digital disaster, appropriate courses of action go on a case-by-case basis.
One universally effective step you can take right now is to back up any data stored on vulnerable servers TODAY...there is no convenient moment to have your client contact list suddenly held for ransom. If you’re on an Exchange server, you might also be able to find out if yours is among the known victims of this massive attack here. If you’re using an onsite server, you’re not totally immune from disaster...this analog horror story delivers a sobering reminder.
Of course, if you’re looking for more specific guidance on safeguarding your sensitive data from the latest evolution in the arms race against cybercrime or just the perils of our unpredictable existence here on The Planet, shoot me an email or schedule a live call here...let’s talk.
No More Excuses
Have you ever been looking at Google Earth for your region and wondered why your office isn’t on the map? Well, you have only yourself (or your IT guy) to blame for that...the worldwide leader in maps will add the location of your business to its global records, and it will do so for free...just follow this link to find out how to make it happen.
Hey, It’s Today Somewhere
After this...month? Year? How long has it been since everything deflated slightly?
Wait, what year is it?
Well in any event after this deflating time period many of us could use a drink, and with all the travel restrictions we’ve been spending a lot of time around the house perfecting our favorite cocktail recipes. My wife knows I love a good Old-Fashioned, and though her standard rendition more than gets the job done I have to say I love this new twist she found on YouTube.
If you have one you think is even better, send it my way...“taste tester” has always been among my strongest skills.
The Last Word
Well, that should just about wrap things up for this exciting edition of “Brad’s Blog!” I say it every time, and mean it every time I type it, but I really appreciate you taking the time to read my rambles on a weekly basis. I’ll be back in your inbox sooner than you think--these months are really starting to run together--but for now I’m working from home and someone brought donuts, gonna grab one before the good kinds are taken...have a productive and fulfilling week!

]]>Stay Safe to Finish StrongBy now most of us have returned to some semblance of normalcy, but unfortunately we are still in the depths of the COVID crisis. If you´re going to be traveling this winter, consider planning an itinerary that goes through one of the airports offering on-site testing…it´s a really convenient resource that can help mitigate the spread and get us through these trying times much faster.Of course, for Team Archway normal includes working from home…we´re almost entirely remote, the only two employees on this site are myself and my furry assistant. Still, if you work in a shared space, it´s important to consider what measures you can take to keep your staff safe as the temperatures drop and everyone starts sneezing. This handy guide from PCMag details some of the most prudent space management techniques you can use to bring your old office into this brave new world of ours…it’s probably easier than you think. Productive Production I send a lot of video messages–what can I say, the camera loves me–and Hippo is a great tool for turning them out. The fact is videos immediately grab attention in a way the written word just doesn’t (trust me, I´ve used plenty of both) and with a real-time analytics suite along with deep personalization options, it’s simple to see what’s working while fine tuning it to be even better. I´ve even used it to prepare this special message for my readers…I figured it out in no time flat, and so can you. Every Little Bit CountsMany of us are looking for a way to pocket a few extra pesos these days, and one way you can cut corners and still remain a well-rounded operation is by finding more cost-effective options for Internet access and VOIP service. That’s why, for a limited time, we are offering YOU a free consultation highlighting where you could be saving money. We don’t resell a thing, we just want to do you a solid in a time where we could all use one. Just send us your internet and VOIP related invoices here and we can schedule a time to get on the phone with you and go over some of your options…we’re not talking coupon clipping here either, we saved one client $10K on their monthly expenses…now that’s worth calling home about. Black Friday and BeyondI don’t think it´s much of a stretch to say we´re all under a bit more stress than usual in 2020, and since retail therapy is proven to be A Thing, there’s no better time for the phenomenal deals that Black Friday always brings.Stranger things have certainly happened this year, but I really don’t see stores encouraging their shoppers to go full zombie attack and stack up against the glass 5 bodies deep overnight this time around. Most of the big brands are making the yearly consumer celebration into an all-month affair, and if you need more information on where you can start filling your shopping cart, look no further than this piece from Forbes. The Last WordAll right, that´s about it for this week! Thanks as always for making time in your weekly routine for another effervescent edition of ¨Brad´s Blog!¨ I´ll be back in a few days´ time–assuming you continue to extend me the honor of appearing in the inbox you actually check–but until then remember: every day your feet touch the floor is at least a pretty good one. |

]]>The post Appreciating Accountability + Introducing Taco! first appeared on Archway Computer.
]]>Sure, this is a digital newsletter, but sometimes analog business takes precedence, and this is one of those times…so, I´d like all of you to meet Taco!
That´s what I´ve decided to call the new pup my son rescued from Tijuana…his more commonly recognized name is Hudson, but he´ll always be Taco in my heart.
Taco Hudson-Ruben was in pretty bad shape when he came into our lives, but luckily he came to the home of a smart and caring kid–one of mine, made him myself–now he´s all patched up and even has pet insurance through Embrace…a happy ending if I´ve ever seen one, and a great start to this week´s episode.
PS- He´s single, ladies! (Wait, are we still talking about Taco?)
Running a small business is a Herculean task in the best of times, but when things get as unpredictable as they are at the moment, it can seem downright impossible.
One of the more frequent conversations I´ve had this year with my entrepreneur buddies is how they´re actually going to pay back those Paycheck Protection Program loans they got earlier this year with cashflow so hard to pin down from month to month…hard to pay back a federal loan when you had to take out a federal loan just to repay your employees for their time, yeah?
Fortunately, help appears to be on the way…a bipartisan contingent of Senate members has introduced legislation aimed at forgiving PPP loans made to the little guy…if you borrowed $150,000 or less through the program, there´s a good chance all you have to do is wait it out.
There, that should fill my quota of political content for the month.
I´m a big believer in the power of motivation, but I have to be honest: I always thought the whole life coaching concept was a bit…lame. I certainly respect the benefit of lived experience, but at the end of the day who could possibly know my goals and vision better than the guy in the mirror?
Well, The Great Pause gave all of us time to reconsider our perspectives, and what I´ve discovered in these less than ideal times is that what these professionals offer is a sense of accountability. Knowing I have a call with Coach Gail every week at a certain time helps me build a framework in my mind, a process that leads to consistently successful results…sounds like something your elementary school principal would say, but a little structure goes a long way.
All right, I think that seems like a pretty good place to wrap up this engaging edition of ¨Brad´s Blog!¨ Thanks as always for taking the time, I appreciate you for it. I should be back in a week´s time with more geeky goodness, but if you have something you have to share before then (or just want more pictures of Taco), drop me an email!

]]>The post Seizing Summer + The Imaginarium of Dr. Brad first appeared on Archway Computer.
]]>Despite about a decades worth of plot twists, we have made it through the first half of 2020 and that means it´s summer time! Summer has long been my favorite season…from travel and event season to something as simple as a backyard barbecue, for me the months between May and September are the best part of our yearly ride around the Sun.Like pretty much everyone else on Earth I’ve spent a lot of time staring at the walls of my home recently, so I plan to make up for lost time by spending my fair share of time outside over the coming weeks.
For easily seared individuals such as myself, that means sunscreen is an absolute must…but what I only found out a few summers ago is that I´ve been applying it wrong my entire life…essential knowledge to have for anyone else who tans like a basted game bird.
While I´m here at my work desk, however, it’s easy to appreciate that not much has changed at the offices of Team Archway since The Great Reset.
We’ve been working from our various homes full time for at least 8 years, so it was a painless transition from choice to necessity. Where many organizations are having trouble finding their footing in the changing times, we´re lucky enough to be thriving. This piece from Gartner spells out so many of our everyday experiences with the new normal…there are far more pros than cons, if you know how to look for them.
iOS 14 is right around the corner, so if you were thinking about starting off the summer with a new Apple device, my advice would be to hold off until the fall.
This piece from MacRumors goes into detail about what we can expect from the latest generation of devices, including picture-in-picture functionality for a range of apps including FaceTime and improvements to the security suite…unless you need a slightly better camera that badly, I´d wait for the updates.
Well, that´s about all for this week…if you have any more free time to spare in the next few days, check out my YouTube channel full of interesting interviews and my signature brand of brilliance. Thanks as always for joining me for another incredible installment of ¨Brad´s Blog,¨ here’s to a strong second half of 2020!
The post Seizing Summer + The Imaginarium of Dr. Brad first appeared on Archway Computer.
]]>The post Finding Appreciation (and your stuff) first appeared on Archway Computer.
]]>Are you one of those people who´s constantly losing things? Your house keys seemingly migrate to a new location every night as you sleep, your phone likes to cruise around town in an Uber long after you’ve gotten out, your wallet occasionally hides in your home with all your cash and cards…it´s a constant struggle.
At least, that´s what I hear…Chipolo addresses that issue for me quite neatly. With the Chipolo system, you can tag your items with these delightfully multicolored location tracking chips and get an alert on your phone through the app when you leave something behind…or, if it´s your phone that´s made a break for it this time, you can just give the chip a double tap and your phone will ring at max volume…perfect for cutting that daily game of ¨Where´s My Stuff¨ short.
There is no shortage of uses for an iPad…from digital artist’s easel to futuristic restaurant menu, the little slab of possibilities does it all in our modern world…but did you know you can also use it as a second display for your computer? It´s one of those neat tech tricks you only find out about when you spend enough time at the terminal to necessitate a second monitor, like the good folks at PCMag.
That´s why I was so excited to recently learn that you can share your fitness regimen with people or groups through Apple FItness…now we can be workout buddies! If you want to stay in shape together (separately) and maybe hear some of my signature smack talk on the occasions I do get a good workout in, just email me here.
I typically try to avoid ending things on a down note in this space, but sitting here with the cursor blinking it comes to mind that I would be remiss in closing out this week without acknowledging the loss of someone special in my life.
My brother-in-law Pat suddenly passed away last month, and I’ve been thinking about him every day since then.
Pat was a great man, a loving father and caring friend who also made the best Key Lime pie you ever tasted. At just 64 years old, Pat definitely passed before his time…my sister and his two children are devastated by his loss as well.
Charley in particular is suffering with the loss of his father, as his special needs mean that he will lose out on a lifetime of support from a core caretaker at a critical time in his life. It´s a little overwhelming to think about the ways in which this will change his life.
I try not to dwell on the negative things in life here with you…it´s not that I don´t notice these are strange and difficult days on Planet Earth, i’ts just that there are plenty of other sources of bad news. Still, in some cases, challenging times can prove poignant as well…making the drive down to comfort my sister gave me plenty of time to consider what I have, to appreciate the bounty of life and to make a conscious effort to enjoy every moment. I think you should too.
Thanks for being with me this week…here´s to an ever-brighter future.

]]>The post Cybertruck: Built for 2020 first appeared on Archway Computer.
]]>The design is pretty polarizing, but count me as a big fan of the Cybertruck.
It just screams ¨future!¨…from the shatterproof* windows to the angular design, it not only announces itself as a departure from everything we know about cars, it actively makes you question how we´ve gone so long with the vast majority of vehicles having one of a few basic shapes. Remember how the Concorde stood out at an airport?
As someone who has been waiting for the future to come my entire life, I´m fully enamored with the thing…I went over to the Petersen Museum here in LA to see the public debut of Tesla´s latest and greatest sensation the other day, and of course, you know I have a down payment on it. I want my Cybertruck yesterday…but I can accept that it only comes in tomorrow. That’s the whole appeal of it.
They say ¨if you´re not paying for the product, you are the product,¨ and although I feel that´s an especially cynical take, when it comes to the Internet and data security there´s more truth to the famous phrase than most people are comfortable with.
The fact is businesses make a fortune selling your information to anyone with cash and a computer, so if you–like me–are committed to keeping the details of your life out of the hands of Internet randos, SafeShepherd is an outstanding resource. SafeShepherd can show you where your information may be exposed and help you take control of your Internet footprint for good…one of those ¨ounce of prevention, pound of cure¨ things.
There´s never a wrong time to show a little gratitude, but I do notice that there’s a little deeper of an appreciation for the concept these days.
I´ve always been a big believer in thank-you cards–¨every sweater gets a letter,¨ goes the longstanding family gift-reception protocol I just made up–and Postable is an easy way to return the favor to someone who has recently put a smile on your face…check out our latest creation of appreciation, inspired by viewers like you!
With Postable, you too can customize cards for any occasion, graphic design skills totally optional. I even love how the name works both in a social media and snail-mail sense…when you put thought into things, people really appreciate it.
That should just about do it for this week´s engaging edition for ¨Brad´s Blog!¨ I´m going to go hit the refresh button on the Tesla website for no reason now, but I´ll be back in your inbox in about a week´s time…if you have anything to share, you know my email address, right?

]]>I know, I know…I made a big show about retiring IT as a topic of discussion in this space just last week, but when tech comes to the rescue in any situation it is difficult for this lifelong geek to look away.
It´s encouraging enough to know that drugs like Remdesivir and the variety of vaccines in development are starting to show signs of success, but a real sign that we might be on the road to living in the future we were promised in so many works of sci-fi is the joint effort between Apple and Google to plague-proof our world with location-based tools.
For example, let´s say you were at the supermarket last Saturday picking up a few things and ended up within Bluetooth connection range (anyone who has ever used a speaker has an approximate idea of the radius involved here) of someone who reports testing positive sometime that next week…this exposure notification tool would generate an alert telling you that you may have been exposed and should get tested.
Of course, there are some privacy concerns. Anytime a bold new technology is rolled out as a response to a crisis, there is the chance that these desperate measures will be misused in less desperate times, and having your phone´s Bluetooth keep a record of other phones it has come into contact with could certainly have problematic aspects in the future.
Still, the present is made up of some truly strange days, and so pretty much anything that gets us the outside world back in a recognizable form might be worth considering.
In other news, it´s warming up fast here in Southern California, and I don´t know about you but there´s something very ¨Falling Down¨ about starting a sweltering Los Angeles day with a hot cup of coffee.
That´s why I´m definitely looking forward to iced coffee season–gotta keep this sweet new coffeemaker gainfully employed through the summer–and this guide from CNET sheds some light on how to navigate the surprisingly unintuitive process of making it at home…don´t make the mistake everyone does the first time, just dumping ice cubes in hot coffee is no bueno.
Outreach is essential to any company…well, almost any, I could really do without airlines I don´t even fly any more sending me emails about how much they miss me these days, blech.
That typed, we´re in an industry where keeping in touch with our clientele is key to maintaining it, but spending all day sending out and responding to individual messages from hundreds of clients seems like the insurance business version of one of those drill sergeant punishments…you know, clean the mess hall with a toothbrush, sweep all the sunshine off the sidewalk, all that.
That´s why I rely on a product called Sakari to take a lot of the heavy lifting off my hands in that department…it has some pretty cool automation features for bulk messaging, so it makes life in this business a lot easier.
All right, that´s about all for this week, assuming you got your Archway ¨Social Distancing¨ shirt, designed by my daughter and worn proudly by me here. If not…what are you waiting for?
Not only do all proceeds from the purchase of this shirt go directly to local crisis relief efforts, but it´s a real crowd-pleaser too. Let me tell you, I´m getting all kinds of amused mask crinkles and muffled chuckles during my essential errands these days…brightens up the day a bit.
In any event, regardless of what you´re wearing this workday…or not…here´s to a productive and fulfilling one for my much-appreciated readership.
Until next time!

]]>Listen, I’m done. I’m done writing about it, I’m done talking about it, I’m done thinking about it.
The timeless Serenity Prayer looks inside to find ¨the serenity to accept the things we cannot change¨…well, at the moment there’s not a lot we can change about this strange new world we share.
However, it also asks for ¨the courage to change the things one can¨…and that’s where we can take positive action in this time of uncertainty.
After some deep reflection, I’ve come to the conclusion that the healthiest thing to do given the circumstances is to get back to work, in mind and spirit if not in body…with that in mind, I was lucky enough to secure an interview with someone I really admire.
Steve Anderson knows I consider him an all-around good guy, but what he may not know until reading it here, is that I also think of him as a mentor.
Steve’s thought leadership in the space of Insurance and Technology and his steady work-ethic has given me consistent guidance throughout my career. I’ve also learned a lot from his new book, an insightful examination of tech magnate and junior world leader Jeff Bezos. Steve has a worthy perspective, and so I hope you enjoy the video interview. It’s definitely insightful and worth a watch. And maybe you want to subscribe to my Youtube channel while you are at it.
There are CRM capabilities built into many agency management systems the same way there may be a pair of scissors built into a Swiss Army knife…only kinda. The fact is that in most cases, the native resources in this area tend to…well, suck. Enter Hubspot. At just 50 bucks monthly to get started, Hubspot will transform your agency sales process and likely pay for itself in no time…another worthy mention, where it will actually integrate with your management system is Agency Revolution, which you should also give a try.
…but enough about work, already! One lesson from early 2020 that I will be taking with me into my future endeavours concerns the importance of making the most of our leisure time, and so I´m already looking forward to grilling season.
That’s right, summer is right around the corner, so I´m already scouting out this year’s addition to my outdoor kitchen. The lead candidate is this sweet collapsible model from Coleman…they named it the ¨Roadtrip X-Cursion,¨ which seems a bit redundant…but hey the thing folds flat for storage, wheels around as easy as a shopping cart, and pops up into a propane powerhouse in seconds so ya know what I can overlook it.
In the meantime I´m going to have to offset all that impending grillmastery with a little extra attention to wellness…I´m not going to cut BBQ out of my life, just not gonna, so it´s probably a good idea to keep an eye on my overall health.
The right apps can go a long way in helping you monitor your habits…I personally use Sleep Watch and HRV Tracker on my Apple Watch daily.
In fact, there are quite a few Watch apps that can help you work around one vice or another–or become the picture of overall health, if you insist–and this piece from TechRadar spotlights a few of the best to come out so far in 2020.
Well, that should just about do it for this week. Thanks as always for making time in your routine for another exciting episode of ¨Brad´s Blog!¨ I´ll be checking in again within a few days, but until then remember: we seldom control our circumstances, but almost always control our responses to them.

]]>¨Social distancing¨ has become enshrined in the pop culture vocabulary of 2020 and beyond, but any nerd knows that we were doing it way before it went mainstream….so when my daughter came up with the concept for the shirt you see, I immediately ordered one for all of Team Archway…but I didn´t think it was fair to keep all the style and social media likes for ourselves…and that´s why we made it so you can get one of your very own!
Not only is this shirt an ideal attire choice for all the hottest and most exclusive video conferences of the season, ALL SALE PROCEEDS will go to the Feeding America program, so you can look good, have a laugh, and help the most vulnerable people in our country keep food on their tables through this unprecedented challenge. That´s a nice little bundle of wins.
It’s been a while since my last PTA meeting, but I can only imagine what it’s like to have school-age children sitting around the house just waiting to be educated, as kids do…it’s like some kind of endless snow day (or at least what this Southern California boy hears that snow days were like on the TV).
The students themselves may not mind the free time too much, but if you´re looking for a way to salvage some semblance of schooling between now and the usual end of the academic year, Rosetta Stone has stepped to the plate with a sweet offer.
The language learning resource is offering free student access to its online tools for 3 months, and since your 3rd grader is probably going to slack off at some point in the next 90 days, it’s a good opportunity for you to pick up a few phrases as well, n´est-ce pas?
While we can–and will–try to make the best of it, in some cases the reality of the current crisis is always evident. Particularly here in the LA area, the concert and festival season would typically be in full swing by the end of April, but with Mayor Garcetti recently making the pronouncement that Angelenos should probably not expect to amass anytime soon, it´s safe to say that this is not a typical year.
On the bright side, it is definitely cool to see big-time artists and creators still looking for ways to keep their fans engaged through these strange days, and this list of upcoming livestreams is proof that is we absolutely have to pick a time to be locked inside indefinitely, the Internet age isn´t the worst choice. Featured artist range from Snoop Dogg to the Grateful Dead and pretty much everyone in between, so you´re bound to find something worth a click and listen.
All right, that´s about all for this week, but before I go I want to thank everyone reading this for taking the time to do so…it´s great to know I still have an audience with all this competition. I´ll be checking in with you in a few days, keep an eye on your inbox, but if you have something worth sharing for the next episode, a reader email always puts a smile on my face so shoot one over anytime!

]]>The ability to work around our current circumstances and try to enjoy our ride around the Sun no matter what is a skill set that can prove useful in many facets of life…and so it was really encouraging to see so many friendly faces during our happy hour last Saturday.
25 of us showed up and it was actually a great time…humans are, after all, social creatures, and a little upbeat interaction can go a long way toward keeping up morale in a difficult and unpredictable time. I find myself even more sold on Zoom…it´s free to sign up, but the premium features are worth the investment.
These days pretty much everybody in the business is having to write half a billion emails daily explaining to clients that their standard policy doesn’t cover pandemics…it’s just not something most people think about on a day to day basis the way they might a fire or flood.
Most people, that is.
As one of the rare exceptions, the guy responsible for procuring insurance for Wimbledon apparently deserves a raise. That´s right, back during the SARS scare about 20 years ago, this person displayed a singular level of foresight in asking a single profound question: ¨hmm, but what if no tennis because pandemic?¨
And so, after what I imagine was many long conversations with the High Council of Wimbledon (made that up, but I said ¨I imagine¨), the tournament was insured against a global medical crisis at the cost of 2 million USD yearly.
Oh, how the other sports must have laughed…and then 2020 rolled around and foresight paid off to the tune of $141,000,000.
Even the least mathematical among us can see a good bit of daylight between less than 40 million and almost 150 million, so kudos to Wimbledon Insurance Guy (WIG is what they call him… OK, I made that up too).
To say that the tools of the Internet will be essential managing the workplace of the near future is like observing that an advanced alien technology ¨runs on some sort of electricity.¨
You´re not wrong, it´s just that there’s a fair bit of missing information.
Fortunately we have people in the industry like Angela Adams–of Angela Adams Consulting, of course–to help fill in the gaps. She made this video full of actionable information about making a smooth transition to the offsite office, including helpful tips on managing a remote workforce.
Well, that´s about all for this week! Thanks as always for taking the time to check out this essential edition of ¨Brad´s Blog¨…with so many options for how you spend your time now, I´m honored that you spent a little with me. Until next time, stay safe!

]]>Are you spending a lot more time with your laptop lately and wish you had a bigger screen?
Well, if your local essential goods store specializing in oversized computer monitors has shut down for a bit, you may have an option already lying around at home: your television! This easy to follow guide from CNET details how to connect your laptop to your TV for a big-time upgrade to your laptop´s manufacturer-specified screen size…great for watching YouTube videos.
Definite DO.
In a completely organic segue from the last segment, these last few weeks hanging around at Bradquarters has given me plenty of time to work on expanding my skill set, and one thing I´ve always liked doing but never consistently had the space on my schedule for is sitting down with the industry’s big thinkers and getting their unique angle on what we do.
There are some people in this business with interesting ideas–we can be way more creative than we get credit for–and one of them is BJ Shacknowski, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer over at Vertafore. I got a few minutes of his time recently for a video interview in the latest ¨Brad´s Vlog¨ episode on my YouTube channel…if you have the time (that´s a joke, it´s the only thing we all have right now) I recommend you DO check it out.
I don´t know about you, but I am just about done with the news for year.
You may know why.
It seems like so many outlets are focused on trying to grab attention with some ghastly figure or shocking footage rather than putting out actionable information…not that the media didn’t have a sickness for that long before we flipped the calendar to 2020, but this is the worst time for them to be at their worst and here we are. That’s why I made the decision about a week ago to cut the TV out of this conversation, DON´T let it bring that energy into your life.
Instead, I get my information and updates from here. No anchor histrionics, no breathless effort to get the worst news out first, just simple data and prediction models to help you make the best decisions in a strange time.
Not heading down to my local watering hole for a few $11 drinks on a fairly regular basis has freed up some funds as well as plenty of time, so I decided to finally jump into a new hobby with both feet…check out my new drone!
The Mavic Mini puts precision control in palm of your hands with smartphone app integration as well as a low profile design that fits right in the palm of your–ah wait, just used that one–um, your pocket. Going outside just went from a definite DON´T to a (kinda) DO, what an investment.
All right, that´s about it for this time around, but thanks as always for spending some time with me on this engaging edition of ¨Brad´s Blog¨, we might all have a little more time on our hands these days but I always appreciate yours. I´ll be back in your inbox before you know it, be great if you DO drop me an email before then!
